The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the submission of political parties’ membership registers to May 10, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections, following concerns raised by stakeholders over the earlier timeline.
The commission disclosed this in a statement issued yesterday by its National Commissioner and chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, noting that the decision followed consultations with political parties.
According to him, the new deadline replaces the earlier date of April 21, 2026, contained in the revised timetable.
“At the meeting of the Commission with political parties on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, concerns were raised over the timeline for the submission of parties’ registers of members under the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election,” he said.

Haruna explained that the commission subsequently agreed to adjust the timeline in line with legal provisions.
“The Commission agreed to review the period for the submission of political parties’ registers of members to align the 21 days prescribed by Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, with the actual dates fixed by political parties,” he stated.
He added that political parties are now at liberty to determine the dates of their primaries within the approved window.
He further clarified that submission of membership registers must comply with the law.
“The register of party members must be submitted to INEC not later than 21 days before the conduct of their respective primaries,” he added.
