A coalition of political support groups has declared that former Nigerian president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is prepared to contest the 2027 presidential election, citing concerns over the country’s current economic and security situation.

The announcement was made at an international press conference organised by the Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan 2027, where its president, Dr. Tom Ohikere, addressed journalists and stakeholders.

Ohikere said the coalition serves as “a unified platform bringing together various support groups across Nigeria and the diaspora,” with the aim of coordinating efforts toward what he described as “the return of purposeful leadership.”

He stated that Jonathan “is prepared to contest for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the 2027 election,” adding that the former leader “enjoys broad acceptance among many Nigerians.”

The coalition expressed concern about the state of the nation, arguing that “Nigerians are weary of a leadership that appears disconnected from the realities on ground,” and that current policies have left citizens “uncertain about the future.”

According to Ohikere, the group is committed to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting credible elections, and restoring public trust in governance. He said the coalition would prioritise “ensuring that every vote counts and that democratic outcomes reflect the true will of the people.”

He also outlined plans to promote inclusive governance, noting that the coalition aims to encourage “fair representation, national unity, and constructive engagement across regions.”

On the economy, Ohikere said Nigeria is facing “deepening hardship,” with rising inflation and unemployment affecting households and businesses. He added that “many businesses have scaled down operations, while unemployment continues to affect a large segment of the population.”

Security challenges were also highlighted, with the coalition noting that “communities across the country continue to face threats that undermine safety and economic activity.”

The group further pointed to currency instability and concerns over transparency in governance as factors contributing to public dissatisfaction.

Ohikere described Jonathan as a leader with “comprehensive experience and a proven record of national leadership,” referencing his previous roles in government and his tenure as president.

He also cited the former president’s handling of democratic processes, stating that “his peaceful transfer of power remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s political history.”

The coalition referenced the 2014 National Conference as a framework for national development, noting that its recommendations “remain a credible framework for restructuring and strengthening the nation.”

During the briefing, Ohikere also responded to remarks previously made by former vice president Atiku Abubakar, who had described Jonathan as inexperienced. He rejected the claim, saying it was “one of the most careless and unfounded remarks in recent political discourse.”

He argued that Jonathan’s political trajectory reflects “a clear and steady path” through various levels of governance, adding that “leadership is not only measured by ambition or longevity in politics, but by the quality of service and the record left behind.”

The coalition said it would continue to mobilise support nationwide and engage stakeholders ahead of the 2027 election.

Ohikere urged Nigerians to reflect on past and present leadership, stating that “the future of the nation depends on selecting individuals with proven ability and a clear understanding of governance.”

He added that the coalition believes Jonathan’s candidacy offers “a credible path toward recovery and growth,” while calling on citizens to make informed choices about the country’s leadership.
