Key governorship hopefuls of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State have formally aligned on a consensus-driven pathway for the selection of the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2027 general elections,
The decision followed a ‘strategic high-level meeting’ held at the Maitama residence of former Senate President and PDP leader, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
The meeting brought together key aspirants who have indicated interest in the party’s governorship ticket.
In a joint position reached after deliberations with Saraki in attendance described as “cordial and extensive,” the aspirants agreed to prioritise party unity over individual ambition.

They said the decision was driven by the need to prevent internal division and to position the party for a stronger electoral showing in 2027.
“The overall interest of the party and its success in the 2027 elections are more important than our individual ambitions,” the aspirants stated.
The agreement was jointly signed by former Speaker of Kwara Assembly, Ali Ahmad, son of the former Chief of Staff to late President Muhammadu Buhari, Omar Bolaji Gambari, one-time Chief of Staff to Kwara state government, Alhaji Ladi Hassan, Olaseni Ibiwoye (SAN), and retired Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Agency and Dan Iyan of Ilọrin, Engr Kale Kawu.
They further resolved that the party should be allowed to oversee a consensus-driven process in line with democratic norms and relevant electoral guidelines.
The PDP aspirants stressed that discipline within the ranks remained critical to electoral victory.
They pledged to fully support whoever eventually emerges as the party’s gubernatorial candidate, regardless of personal outcomes from the process.
“We will accept the decision of the party leadership and give our full support to whoever emerges,” the statement read.
The aspirants also disclosed that consultations had already begun with their supporters across the state to explain and promote the consensus decision.
They described the process as a necessary sacrifice for political stability within the party.
The group also vowed to maintain engagement with their political bases to ensure compliance with the agreement and to prevent parallel mobilisations that could threaten party cohesion.
They expressed confidence in the leadership of the party to manage the process fairly, while urging divine guidance for all stakeholders involved in the decision-making process.
Daily Trust reports that the development was a significant attempt to avoid the kind of fractious primaries that have previously weakened opposition structures in the state.
