The Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum has announced its decision to withdraw support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing what it described as the erosion of democratic values and worsening socio-economic conditions under the current administration.

The forum disclosed this in a statement signed by its president, Akin Malaolu, following a visit by its leadership to the national headquarters of the ADC in Abuja.

According to the group, its engagement with the party was prompted by dissatisfaction with governance at the federal, state and local council levels, which it said has diminished public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.

The forum pointed to the recent local government council elections in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which recorded low voter turnout, as evidence of growing public disillusionment.

It also expressed concern over Nigeria’s international image under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing the situation as troubling.

“To save democracy from further decline, we have resolved not to back the APC in any future elections,” the statement said.

“We have instead chosen the ADC as a viable alternative capable of partnering, listening and addressing Nigeria’s diversity while working to reverse the nation’s misfortunes.”

The Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum described the ADC as a credible platform to challenge APC’s dominance, citing the party’s recent electoral gains, including victories in two House of Representatives seats. It also highlighted the involvement of prominent political figures associated with the party, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, former governors and ministers such as Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, Solomon Dalung and Nasir El-Rufai, among others. Former Senate President David Mark was also mentioned as national chairman of the party.

The group warned that Nigeria’s economy has “plummeted dangerously,” with rising unemployment and insecurity spreading to rural communities, raising fears of food insecurity. It accused the APC-led government of being overwhelmed by challenges of its own making.

Beyond political alignment, the forum said it intends to contribute its leadership experience to the ADC through policy advisory roles, policy re-engineering and joint strategic discussions. It added that it would work with the party to ensure Yoruba interests are adequately reflected in its policy framework and campaign strategies, particularly across key constituencies in the South-West.

The Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum also called on people in the South-West, as well as Nigerians of Yoruba origin in the diaspora, to register with the ADC at their ward levels and support the party in upcoming elections at all levels.
