The Arewa Think Tank (ATT) has described fears of an alleged one-party state ahead of the 2027 general elections as the excuse of weak politicians who are afraid of political competition.

The Convener of the group, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, stated this while speaking to journalists after a special prayer session organised in honour of Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani.

Yakubu said the growing defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should not be misconstrued as a threat to democracy.

“Only weak politicians complain about a one-party state. If you are strong and confident in your popularity, you will stand your ground and face the electorate,” he said.

He recalled how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained politically resilient between 1999 and 2007 when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dominated the national political space.

“President Tinubu did not cry about a one-party state. He stood firm as a one-man opposition and eventually prevailed. Others should learn from that example,” Yakubu said.

According to him, defections to the APC are driven by performance and belief in leadership, not coercion.

“When honey is sweet, bees will follow it. People are joining the APC because they see direction and hope in Tinubu’s administration,” he added.

On the performance of Governor Uba Sani, Yakubu said the calibre of dignitaries present at the prayer session, including a former governor of the state, was an indication of the governor’s growing acceptance across political divides.

He cited improved security, sustained engagement with critical stakeholders and the attraction of foreign investment, including a $600 million Chinese facility for poultry and agricultural development, as evidence of good governance in Kaduna State.
