A coalition of civil society activists in Kano State has called on former governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, to contest the Kano Central senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, citing his leadership record and growing support among youths.

The appeal was made in a statement presented at a gathering of activists and stakeholders held between April 29 and 30, 2026.

Addressing journalists, the convener of the coalition, Amb. Usman Saidu, said the call was driven by what he described as an urgent need to restore stability and progress in Kano Central.

“We gathered here to make a solemn and patriotic declaration—a declaration not only of hope, but of urgency to rescue Kano Central from the grip of uncertainty, division, and stagnation, and to restore her to the path of stability, progress, and shared prosperity,” Saidu said.

He added that the appeal followed sustained interest and agitation among young people in the district, who, according to him, have expressed confidence in Shekarau’s leadership capacity.

“The call to return Mallam Shekarau as senator representing Kano Central was driven not by sentiment but by conviction rooted in leadership experience and past performance,” he said.

The coalition described the former governor as “a statesman of uncommon humility” and “a symbol of democratic stability,” noting his contributions to youth development, education, and peace-building.

“We hereby formally call on His Excellency, Sen. Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, to answer the call of history and contest for the Senate in the 2027 elections,” Saidu stated.

The group also appealed to civil society organisations, youth groups, and students to support what it termed a “historic movement,” expressing confidence that Shekarau’s track record would attract widespread grassroots backing.

“We need a leader who understands governance. We call on CSOs, youth groups, students and all stakeholders to support this movement,” he said.

The activists further expressed optimism about Shekarau’s chances if he decides to run, pointing to his reputation and past public service.

“We see it as very possible to deliver Mallam Shekarau, given his track records and antecedents, which have endeared him to many grassroots voters,” the statement added.

The coalition concluded by urging the former governor to heed the call and offer himself for service, assuring him of electoral support from constituents in Kano Central.
