In spite of available prevention and treatment methods of the deadly HIV/AIDS pandemic, about 220, 000 people still get infected with the virus annually, the Institute of Human Virology of Nigeria (IHVN) has disclosed.
IHVN Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Patrick Dakum, who made this known yesterday, also said the fact that Nigeria has more children living with HIV in the world and 3.2 million people living with the virus calls for concern.
Dakum spoke in Lagos while addressing newsmen on the proposed fundraiser for the building of International Research Centre in partnership with Access Bank and Dangote Foundation.
The centre estimated to cost N5 billion is to be located in Abuja to conduct research into infectious and non-infectious diseases.
He said given the high prevalence of communicable and non- communicable diseases like HIV/AIDS, cancer, tuberculosis, among others, there was the need to further look at issues of quality and international best practices to achieve positive outcomes in drastically reducing the rate of infections.
Executive Director of Access Bank, Mr. Victor Etuokwu, said the bank would help in pulling together well-meaning Nigerians who would support the initiative at the fundraiser slated for May 25 at Eko Hotels Lagos.
He said the bank would also contribute to the project and provide bridge funding when necessary to actualise the project which he added, was aimed at enhancing healthy living of Nigerians.
Managing Director/CEO, Dangote Foundation, Zouera Youssoufou, said the organisation would also assist in raising awareness among other organisations to contribute to the projects
