About eight officers and 230 soldiers from 81 and 82 Divisions as well as Headquarters Garrison yesterday began an Inter platoon combat swimming championship in Kaduna.

Organisers have said the competition is aimed at improving the combat readiness, comradeship, leadership skills, organizational ability, endurance and promote esprit-de-corps among officers. 

In his opening remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya represented by the Commander, Infantry Corps of the Nigeria Army, Major General Victor Ezugwu said the championship will bring out the soldiering skills among the participants and develop physical and mental endurance amongst others.

“The competition is apt based on the need to bring realism and relevance to our training with a view to encapsulating the challenges our troops are facing in the various operating environments.

“We also need to reinforce ongoing efforts for the review of extant approach to fitness training in formations, units and other NA establishments as well as create the enabling environment for the display of military camaraderie and to underscore my desire for cooperation as well as unity of efforts in the conduct of training for operations.”

The General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Kaduna, Major General Kabir Mukhtar represented by the Garrison Commander, 1 Division, Brigadier General Uriah Opune said the current security challenges in the country have brought to fore the need to continuously reinvigorate military training and operations especially in the aspects of physical and leadership training.

Athletes at the week long competition are competing in 50 meters freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 4 x 50 meter freestyle relay and 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay male and female.
