Forty universities across the sub region were earlier expected to participate in the championship.Delivering his address at the opening ceremony of the games, the Vice Chancellor of BUK, Professor Attahiru Jega said the university’s efforts in sports development translated into the number of trophies its teams won in local and international competitions recently.

Jega said that since the inception of WAUG in 1964, this is the first time the game was being hosted in Nigeria. He said the concept of the games is to foster unity and good relationship among the universities of West Africa.

Harping on the academic excellence of the university, being the best in the country, he hoped that the “best team” would emerge victorious at the end of the sporting fiesta.

The VC said his university had made adequate arrangements for the successful hosting of the tournament, urging the athletes and officials to explore the beauty of the town during their stay.

In his address, the chairman of the Central Co-ordinating Committee (CCC), Professor Abdulrashid Garba, welcomed the athletes and officials to the university, assuring that BUK had made adequate arrangements for the successful hosting of the championship, tagged BUK 2010.
