24-year-old remanded for rape of minor in Ekiti

A magistrate court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has ordered the remand of a 24-year-old man over rape of a 16-year-old girl in the state capital.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Oriyomi Apata, yesterday urged the court to remand the suspect, Ajakaye Ebenezer Olajide, 24, in the correctional centre.

Inspector Apata said the offence is punishable under Section 2(2) of Ekiti State Gender Based Violence (Prohibition) Amended Law 2019.

The police prosecutor supported his claims with a six-paragraph sworn affidavit by a Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Sergeant and with the statement of the victims.

He urged the court to order the remand of the defendant to enable the police to conclude investigation and transmit same to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

The Magistrate, Mr Saka Afunso, ordered the remand of the defendant pending the legal advice from the DPP and adjourned the matter until November 9, 2021, for mention.
