Bayero University Kano has on Tuesday commenced its five-day long 34th convocation ceremonies with 932 candidates from five faculties being conferred with first degrees honours.
The faculties are life sciences, Physical Sciences, Computer Science and Information Technology, Earth and Environmental Sciences as well as the faculty of Communication.
Giving the breakdown of the graduands base on their class of degrees the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello said 25 candidates from the five faculties graduated with first class honours, while 283 others obtained second class upper division respectively.
He added that 399 students had second class lower division while 205 others finished with third class degrees, besides 20 others who had ‘pass’ after their years of studies in the university.
In his speech the V C reiterated the commitment of the university to sustaining its records of academic excellence.
He revealed that the institution has secured full accreditation in 15 undergraduate and eight postgraduate programmes with a view to providing openings for candidates seeking admissions in the university.
About 8,634 graduands are expected to receive awards various degrees and post graduate diplomas during the convocation, with 72 candidates due for first class degrees.
Bello earlier disclosed at the pre-convocation press conference that 5,401 first degrees; 70 PhDs; 1,833 master’s degrees; and 656 postgraduate diploma certificates would be issued to deserving candidates at the 34th convocation of the university.
The 5-day-event is scheduled from April 3 to April 7th to give ample opportunities to graduands and their families to celebrate their academic exploits.
The convocation lecture with the theme ‘Leadership, Security, Development Challenges in Africa: Reflections by a Scholar-Diplomat’, would be delivered by the former Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, on Friday, April 6th.
