Desk Officer Sorghum Transformation Value Chain,Mr.Opara Obinna, stated this at the training programme in Sokoto.
Obinna, who was represented by Mr. Naphtali Telha, said the training programme targeted 90 farmers from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
He said the Federal Ministry of Agriculture will deploy about 150 metric tonnes of certified improved sorghum seeds to Sokoto this year and that Kebbi and Zamfara would also receive as much.
“Sorghum has become the industry’s favourite. Demand for the grain is right away unprecedented as international agencies are currently asking for sorghum grains and flour from Nigeria.
“How do we meet these huge demands and responsibilities if not from our great sorghum farmers who must increase their commitment and interest in sorghum production to actually and qualitatively boost sorghum production,” he stated.
According to the desk officer,it was in realisation of this that they decided to train the farmers on how best to handle sorghum to give them the best quality grains tied on high productivity.
He added that the federal government through the Agricultural Transformation Agenda would supplement farmers with improved high yield sorghum variety and the requisite fertiliser type.
The officer asserted that they were “poised to triple sorghum production using improved certified high yielding sorghum seed varieties and the requisite fertiliser types to unlock great wealth through rapid commercialisation of sorghum production, processing and utilisation of sorghum high energy food for nourishment.”
