2,766 pupils get free eye screening

The students from the Ogun State College of Health Technology, Ilese-Ijebu and Pogil School of Health Technology, Ijebu Ode, conducted the screenings having been trained by Dr. Raj Senthilraj ,the manager of Tulsi Chanrai Foundation and Mr. Christopher Osso, an ophthalmic nurse on how to examine and identify eye diseases.
Among 2,766 students screened, about 300 students were found to have refractive error, cataract, corneal opacity, ptergiums, squint, defective and other types of eye diseases with several symptoms.
Speaking on corneal opacity which is one of the eye diseases, Dr Raj Senthilraj, explained the factors that can increase the likelihood of developing corneal opacity include vitamin A deficiency, measles, and viral infections including ocular or eye herpes, herpes zoster or shingles, and conjunctivitis or pink eye, adding that having an eye injury from a chemical or from something poking or hitting the eye, or wearing contact lenses too long or during the night can also increase a person’s chances.
He explained further that, “when corneal opacity is suspected, a physician will use a slit lamp, which focuses very bright light into a slit, to examine the numerous structures of the eye. Using a magnifying lens and eye drops that dilate the pupils and numb the eye, the doctor is able to check for foreign bodies, and corneal scarring.”
