The Defence Headquarters has said Cameroonian security forces collaborating with Nigerian military in counter insurgency operations in the north east region have captured 288 rifles and 35 rockets from terrorist in Cameroon.

A statement by the Director Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade said the weapons which were meant for use by terrorist operating in Nigeria were over 288 rifles, 35 rocket propelled guns and 35 locally made IEDs.

Olukolade explained that the recovery followed the arrest of two suspects believed to be the major arms suppliers to the terrorist operating in Nigeria

 

He added that the weapons were recovered after a fierce encounter at Abugasse, Cameroon, close to the Chadian border.

“Other weapons recovered included pistols, mortar bombs, sub-machine guns and various calibres of ammunitions following the arrest of two suspects believed to be major arms suppliers to the terrorists in Nigeria,” General Olukolade said.

He further said, “They were nabbed in Abugasse near the Chadian border with Cameroon.   Also in their possession were over 50 Cameroonian Passports as well as a Toyota Jeep.”

General Olukolade also said troops arrested a terrorist at a check point driving in a green Peugeot vehicle with registration Number Bauchi 264 AA heading to Maiduguri from Alagarno during the weekend.

Olukolade noted that this arrest led to the recovery of 15 AK47 rifles and 12 magazines and various yet to be assembled rifles.

He said while military operations around the Alagarno area and other localities around Sambisa forest has been intensified, 14 vehicles hidden by terrorists at various parts of the forest have been destroyed.
Olukolade said various calibres of weapons and ammunitions were also recovered in the course of fighting and subsequent cordon and search of the areas.
