Over 200 women including government officials, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and students walked for peace within the campus of the Kaduna State University (KASU) in commemoration of the International Day of Peace.
This is just as the Governor of Kaduna state, Malam Uba Sani, unveiled the Women Peace and Security Action Plan (KAD-SAP WPS II) and the Youth Peace and Security Action Plan (KAD-SAP YPS) aimed at promoting peace and security across the state.
Speaking at the peace walk and symposium organised by the Kaduna State Peace Commission and 32 other partners, the Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Saleh Momale, appealed for peaceful, free, fair and credible local government elections.
He said, “Local Government elections will be conducted in a couple of weeks from now. We appeal to our electoral bodies, security agencies, political parties, candidates, support groups and the electorate to work together and ensure free, fair, credible and peaceful elections. Indeed, allowing people to freely vote in an atmosphere of peace and stability is a fundamental tenet of democratic governance.
“We are optimistic that with the support of all of you, strengthening the culture and values of peaceful coexistence is attainable. His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State has kept to his promise of priority to peace and security as one the cardinal pillars of his administration.”
On his part, Governor Sani who was represented by Rabi Salisu Hajia, Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, highlighted the state’s commitment to fostering peace, justice, and unity, particularly emphasizing the role of women and youth in peacebuilding.
He also reaffirmed the state’s commitment to peacebuilding adding that peace is a fundamental human aspiration, and the unveiling of the action plans signifies a crucial step towards sustainable peace, justice, and equality in the state.
The Emir of Lere, Engineer Sulieman Umar, echoed the need for justice, unity, and inclusivity as pillars of peace in the state.
He commended the state government for its efforts in promoting unity in diversity and called on all citizens to embrace peace and coexistence.
