The event organised by Arojah Concept in conjunction with the Korean Cultural Centre in Nigeria featured slam champion, Dike Chukwumerije as the guest poet.
Declaring the event open, Chairman of the occasion, Sen. Datti Baba Ahmed, who is also the Pro-chancellor of Abuja based Baze University, lauded the contributions of poets to the evolution of societies saying, “I have been a great admirer of poetry and poets because all great nations of the world have a history of great contributions made by poets in the evolution of their nationhood.”
There were readings of poems by reputed Korean poet Ko Un and other renditions by artistes from the Arojah Royal Theatre.
A Nigerian K-pop team displayed energetic moves and wowed the audience as they danced to the rhythm of Korean contemporary music, setting the stage for Chukwumerije’s performance.
The slam champion did not disappoint as he mesmerized the audience with his poetry, easily sidling from love poems to others that touch on weightier issues resonating with deep meanings. He topped the performance with a wonderful performance in which he showcased his taekwondo skills.
This prompted the Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, HE Choi Jong-hyun to wonder if Chukwumerije is better at taekwondo than poetry.
The ambassador further reiterated his embassy’s commitment to the annual event saying poetry is yet another avenue through which the peoples of Nigeria and Korea could be brought together, adding that he would ensure a grander event next year.
