President of COREN Engineer Kashim Ali gave this charge weekend at the sitting of the council`s registered engineers disciplinary tribunal in Abuja.
Kashim explained that the profession of engineering ethics has no ambiguity, saying it is universal which if wholly imbibed will put the practitioner in a proper perceptive.
At the tribunal sitting, three cases were heard involving Engr. Jimoh Abdul Malik, Engr. Noble Osarunwense and Engr. A.T. Bello.
Malik was tried for supervising a failed hotel under construction in Lokoja.
The charge read: “You signed the structural design of the said hotel and thereafter failed and/or neglected to supervise same which eventually led to the collapse of the hotel building under construction and by this act contravened rule 5(1) of Engineers Code of Conduct, Decree No. 27,1992 and paragraph 2 (f) of the second schedule to the Engineer (Registration, etc) Act Cap E11 2004 and triable by the Registered Engineers Disciplinary Tribunal and Punishable under the Engineers (Registration, etc) Act.”
The accused represented by his counsel sought adjournment.
The second case involved Osarunwense who was said to have in his application to COREN to register his company used a COREN certificate with another firm`s registration number and by this contravened the provisions of Rule 5(1&5) of the Registered Engineers Code of Conduct, Decree No.27, 1992 punishable under the ngineers registration Act.
Counsel to Osarunwe prayed for adjournment for the case document to be properly served.
The third case was that of Bello, a civil engineer who was accused of doing a sub-standard design of a building plan at Asokoro district, Abuja. The complaint was from Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Department of Development Control.
The accused on the 8th of June, 2012 appeared before COREN tribunal panel over the case and admitted that he only stamped and sealed the alleged substandard design as well as admitted that the design was made by an engineering student at Federal University of Technology, Minna.
On the 30th day of January, 2013, the COREN tribunal presided over by Engr. Ibikunle Ogunbayo and five others sat and Engr. A.T. Bello appeared before the Tribunal, when the count was read to him, he pleaded guilty to all the counts and pleaded for mercy. Due to his plea for mercy and display of remorseful mien and candor during the trail, he was suspended from the practice of engineering and other matters related therefore for one calendar year from the date of judgment.
Bello’s counsel present at the sitting prayed the tribunal to reinstate his client and allow him to practice his engineering profession for showing remorse and completing the suspension.
COREN President Ali said Bello had indeed shown remorse and therefore granted him pardon by re-absorbing him into the engineering profession.
