At least three herders were killed while two others injured on Sunday evening when gunmen reportedly ambushed the victims around the Tanjol community of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
A youth leader in Mahanga, Abdullahi Ibrahim Yusuf, who confirmed the incident, explained that the victims were grazing their cattle when the gunmen ambushed and killed them.
He added that one cattle was shot dead while another was injured.
The youth leader said the incident occurred around 2 p.m., identifying the names of the deceased as Abdurrazak Abdullahi 22; Husaini Idris 23; and Yusuf Tukur 19, while the injured are Ayuba Adam and Sadi Adamu.

State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, condemned the incident on Monday, describing it as unprovoked.
“MACBAN expresses its profound sorrow and strongly condemns the tragic killing of three Fulani herders in an incident reported to have occurred around Tanjol in Jol Ward of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday, 19 July 2026, at approximately 2:30 p.m.
“According to information available to MACBAN, the victims were reportedly grazing their cattle when they came under attack,” Babayo said.
MACBAN accused members of Berom ethnic group of carrying out the attack.
The MACBAN chairman however called on members of the herding community to remain calm and never take law into their hands.
He urged security forces to investigate those responsible and bring them to justice.
Berom community denies allegation
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), under the leadership of Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, has denied the allegation, describing it as propaganda and “a calculated attempt to distort the truth”.
In a statement on Sunday, the BYM Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, alleged that those said to have been killed were among the attackers who invaded the community, but were neutralised after vigilantes resisted them.
He also alleged that during the attack on Jol, one Thomas Damang, 48, was killed and three others injured.
