A Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted three women for their involvement in human trafficking and labour exploitation.

Two of the convicts, Adesuwa Osaro and Orunmewegbe Omosede Esther, were jailed for human trafficking following their arrest in a joint operation between the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the British Government’s Joint Border Taskforce.

Upon conclusion of their trial, the trial judge, Justice O.O. Oguntoyinbo sentenced them to 30 and 24 months’ imprisonment without option of fine.

The third convict, Risikat Ibrahim was convicted for abducting an eight-year-old girl from her legal guardian and subjecting the child to labour exploitation after taking her to Seme border. She was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for the act.

Reacting to the judgments, the Director-General of NAPTIP, Dame Julie Okah-Donli, said every conviction is a symbol of justice for the victims, who went through dehumanising experiences at the hands of the human traffickers.
