Barely a day after the return of lawmakers to the state, Nasarawa State witnessed some pockets of violence, leading to the killing of four persons, while a fifth one is critically injured.
Dadere, the troubled town in Obi Local Government, about six kilometers at the outskirts of Lafia, capital of the state, witnessed a violent clash that started evening of Monday, the day the 20 lawmakers of the PDP who signed a notice of impeachment against Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, returned to the state from Abuja where they had relocated to on July 14.
The clash continued today till 12pm, soon after the lawmakers filed out of the chambers of the assembly complex in Lafia, on their second day of legislative proceedings.
Information is still sketchy about the killing, but eyewitness accounts say the four men were attacked on their farms by machete wielding thugs.
Dadere is hometown to the lawmaker representing Obi I, Sidi Bako, whose return to the town on the evening of Monday, witnessed a welcome rally by PDP supporters, whose event attracted a counter rally by supporters of the APC, the opposition party in the area.
The clash dragged to today by about past 12pm, an eyewitness who is resident in the town said.
But the witness insisted that the four persons were attacked on their farms, and had never been part of the political rallies, or clashes in the town.
By about 3pm, a police van drove into Lafia with the three corpses and the one bleeding person, causing panic in the already tensed town. The corpses were deposited at Dalhatu Araf Specialists’ Hospital (DASH), but latter handed to their relatives who proceeded to Dadere for burial according to Islamic rites.
State Police commissioner, Mr. Idris Ibrahim, and the state Director of the State Security Service (SSS), Mr. Ibrahim Samaila, as well as the Lafia unit commander of the 177 Brigades of Guards Battalion, were seen leading a large team of armed security operatives at press time, into Dadere.
Daily Trust could not reach the lawmaker for immediate comments, as an aide of his picked the calls, but insisted that the lawmaker was not available to speak.
