Three people have been killed and several others injured after bandits attacked Dangoro village in Nahuche ward, Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Sunday.

Locals said a nine-month pregnant woman was among those abducted, while multiple houses and silos were set ablaze.

The attack comes days after the federal government pledged commitment to tackling insecurity in Zamfara during a reception for Governor Dauda Lawal following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lawal had previously stated that joining the ruling party would help secure federal support to address worsening insecurity in the state.

Zamfara, like other Northern states, has been plagued by banditry, with armed groups frequently raiding rural communities, killing, and abducting residents for ransom.

A resident, who asked not to be named, said the bandits struck around midnight, abducting an unspecified number of people, mostly women.

“Most residents have fled to Nahuche town for safety,” he added, noting that the attackers had threatened to return.

The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the incident. DSP Yazid Abubakar, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, said the bandits, armed with AK-47 rifles, invaded the village, shooting sporadically and burning houses and silos.

“A joint team of police operatives and vigilante members engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel, repelling them and forcing their retreat into the bush,” he said.

Abubakar added that three people, including a member of the Community Protection Guard, were killed.

“Five sustained gunshot wounds, and four suffered burns. All injured victims are receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, and are responding positively,” he said.

He further disclosed that livestock, including goats, were destroyed.

The police command has intensified efforts to track and apprehend the perpetrators of the attack.
