Three people, including an aged couple, were at the weekend reportedly killed and several others injured in an attack by armed men in Ikpele community in Agatu LGA of Benue State.

Residents said attacks had become frequent in several communities in Agatu LGA, where invasions by alleged herdsmen and communal clashes thrived.

A resident said, “It’s becoming difficult to identify the killers. Sometimes the attacks could be over land and chieftaincy tussles, while at other times they could be direct assault from armed herders.”

Another resident alleged that the latest attack was carried out by armed herders.

The member representing Agatu State Constituency, Godwin Abu Edoh, who confirmed the killings, said the situation was worrisome.

He further said, “A husband and wife who were advanced in age were killed inside their house during the attack.”

The Agatu LGA Chairman, Barr Phillip Ebenyakwu, did not respond to calls and a text message for comment on the incident.

Meanwhile, the police spokeswoman in the state, SP Catherine Anene, said she had no report about the incident.
