Three in 10 couples in Nigeria experience some form of challenge conceiving, a consultant gynecologist , Dr Amdii Ndayi, has said.
He spoke in Abuja during an open forum on fertility with members of the public, organized by the Bridge Clinic, Abuja, a fertility clinic.
He said statistics outlining infertility challenges in Nigeria are alarming, adding that infertility is the inability to conceive after one year (12 months) of unprotected sex, regularly.
The expert explained that there were four causes of infertility where healthy couples cannot conceive after having regular unprotected sex.
He listed them as uterine problems, blocked fallopian tubes, ovarian problems and semen abnormalities.

He added, ” There is also the case in which a woman or a man already has a child from a previous partner and experiences infertility with a new partner. This is also considered as secondary infertility.
“The objective of medical intervention is to find what the problem is and the treatment.”
Dr Ndayi advised couples to consult fertility specialists if they were having issues after 12 months of trying regularly to conceive.
He also explained that pre-implantation genetic testing ( PGT) helps eliminate genetic diseases such as sickle cell, haemophilia, and down syndrome among others from babies.
