Three residents were shot and injured, while a nursing mother, her two-month-old baby, and 13 other residents were abducted after bandits attacked the Gidan-Tama community in the Kachia LGA of Kaduna State.
A community leader from the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the kidnapping to our reporter via telephone on Thursday morning.
He said the incident occurred on Wednesday around 12:27 am, when a large number of bandits, wielding sophisticated weapons, invaded the community and shot sporadically into the air.
The source added that bandits stormed several houses amid the gunfire.
During the raid, three adult males were hit by stray bullets; the victims were later rushed to Kachia General Hospital for treatment.
According to the leader, the bandits abducted 13 villagers along with a nursing mother and her two-month-old child after raiding homes across the community.
“Actually, some of the vigilantes tried to engage the bandits, but when they discovered the bandits’ guns were more sophisticated than their own, they were forced to run for cover to avoid a repeat of what happened in the neighboring Janjala community last Saturday,” he said.
The community leader disclosed that this was the second attack within ten days, noting that bandits had previously abducted six people working at Fadama farms in the area.
A security source, who also preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident. He stated that operatives and vigilantes have been combing the forests around the Sabon-Kurutu axis in Kachia in an effort to rescue the victims.
The spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Hassan Mansur, had not yet reacted to the incident at the time of filing this report.
It would be recalled that last Saturday, bandits invaded the neighboring Janjala community in the Kagarko LGA of the state, abducting a vigilante, his wife, and 12 others.
