3 teenagers drown in Bauchi river

Tragedy struck at Jinkiri village, Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State on Tuesday afternoon, when three teenage boys drowned while swimming in a river near a mining site.

The victims—Habibu Mohammed and Abubakar Mohammed, both 16, and 14-year-old Zailani Sule—had gone with a group of boys to scavenge for mineral deposits near Jinkiri village.

After the day’s mining, the trio, residents of Durum village, reportedly separated from the group to swim in a nearby river, where they drowned.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Bauchi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Wakil, said an investigation had been established and the bodies released to the families for burial.

“In light of this heartbreaking situation, the Nigeria Police Force Bauchi State Command under the able leadership of the Commissioner of Police CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu expresses its deepest condolences to the families affected and underscores the critical need for heightened safety awareness during water activities, especially during inclement weather,” he added
