Thirty passengers, including women and children traveling for prayer meeting to Ebonyi State escaped death by whiskers on Friday when a Coaster bus conveying them caught fire in Onitsha, Anambra state.
The victims sustained various degrees of injuries, and no life lost but they lost their valuables in the accident that followed with fire outbreak.
According to an eye witness, the victims were traveling to Ebonyi State for a prayer meeting when the incident occurred along Innosi-Onira/Boromew roundabout along Enugu-Onitsha expressway.
Daily Trust gathered that the passengers trapped inside the bus were rescued from the fire.
One of the passengers, Mrs. Virginia Ogbuogwu who said she was sitting beside the driver, said many of them sustained various degrees of injuries but no life was lost.
“I suddenly noticed the driver was feeling uncomfortable after stopping at intervals and checking the dashboard“.
“Immediately he saw smoke coming out from the bus, he quickly stopped, quietly alighted and disappeared without saying a word to us.”she said.
While another victim Mrs Paulina Una, who also sustained an injury, said they were taken unawares by the incident as it occurred in seconds.
She said they lost all their valuables including phones, food, clothing and others to the fire.
However she thanked God for saving their lives in the accident, despite what was lost.
One of people that rescued the victims, Mr. Ifeanyi Nworah told Daily Trust that he was moved to help because one of the victims was crying for assistance through the window.
“When I saw the situation, I quickly ran to the scene, broke the glasses with my hands and rescued them,” he said.
