300 disabled persons acquire training

Over 300 persons living with disabilities in Karmajiji, a suburb of Abuja, have been trained in different skills and taken off the street.

The Secretary to the Chief of the People Living with Disabilities in Karmajiji, Mal. Muhammed Dantani, revealed this during the launching of the Genius Skills Empowerment Centre (GSEC) in Kubwa, Abuja, recently.

Mal. Dantani said, “The GSEC initiative has been working in the community for more than four years. They have empowered our children and our people with disabilities with skills such as tailoring, shoemaking, knitting and more. Out of 520 persons, I can tell you they have empowered like 300. They have taught them skills and this has made them leave street begging.”

One of the beneficiaries who is now a shoemaker, Tanimu Danjuma, said, “Before now, I was a street beggar, but after the skills acquisition from Genius Skills Initiative where I learnt shoemaking, I no longer beg. I can feed myself and provide for my basic needs.”

The Executive Director of Genius Skills Empowerment Initiative, Mrs. Afolasade Abioye, said the centre had trained about 1,000 persons in different skills in the past four years, but that the unveiling of the Empowerment House would enable them welcome more trainees.
