300 women get free breast, cervical cancer screening in Kagini

The Medicaid Cancer Foundation has conducted free breast and cervical cancer screening for over 300 women and girls at Kagini Primary Healthcare Centre of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The foundation also donated sanitary pads, soaps and insecticide-treated mosquito nets to the beneficiaries.

A statement from the foundation, yesterday, said the free medical outreach to Kagini was done in collaboration with the FCT Primary Healthcare Development Agency, AMAC, as part of activities to commemorate this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Etsu of Kagini, Alhaji Isa Gbegbe, thanked the foundation for choosing his community for the initiative, adding that the wealth of indigent Nigerians was in their good health.

He promised to support the foundation and the FCT agency in conducting programmes that would benefit the people.

The Medical Coordinator of the outreach, Dr Aliyu Aminu, said the initiative was a contribution to collective efforts to prevent cervical cancer through early tests and screening.

He said it was also a step in achieving the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s target of eliminating cervical cancer in Nigeria and across the world by 2030.

The medical team enlightened the women on cancer types and symptoms, the need for early medical screenings, and where to access care.

The beneficiaries thanked the foundation for the opportunity to learn how to do self-breast examination, and the free screening.

The statement said the event was part of the diverse cancer care initiatives which include advocacy, fundraising and treatment support conducted annually in the International Breast Cancer awareness month of October.
