The sports festival tagged ‘Ibile 2010’ is aimed at discovering hidden talents at the grassroots and empowering the youths through sports.
Disclosing this to sportswriters, Chairman of the State’s Sports Council, Agboola Dabiri, said the Sports Month will feature 24 sports in two junior and senior categories, adding that Secondary School students will compete in the junior category, while the senior cadre will feature local governments and local council development areas of the State.
The preliminary rounds of the festival will kick off with local government council areas and local council development areas vying for honours in Handball, Basketball, Volleyball and football.
Grassroots sports learnt that the event, which will feature about 24 sports, will be used to select athletes that would take part in the zonal preliminaries of the National Sports Festival, slated for November in Cross River State.
Events to be competed for are: football, basketball, boxing, judo, karate, taekwondo, wrestling, kung fu, kick-boxing, handball, hockey, volleyball, abula, ayo, dambe, kokowa and laaga.
Others are athletics, chess, darts, gymnastics, swimming, weightlifting, Paralympics sports, badminton, table tennis and tennis.
According Dabiri, Lagos State Government has decided to invest in the discovery of hidden talents, nurturing them and exposing them to global competitions, so that the lost glory of sports in the state could be recovered.
The tournament will take place at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, which will serve as the main venue, while Campos Square Mini Stadium, Yaba College of Technology, Rowe Park Sports Centre and Jalisco Sports Centre are other venues.
