A school survey conducted across Kaduna State has revealed that at least 3,135 schools are without any water supply facilities, while 4,077 schools have no source of electric power.
This was contained in the 2017 budget document recently presented to the State House of Assembly by Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i. The census according to the governor revealed that student completion rate is 24.17%, 54.94% and 70.14% for primary, junior secondary school and senior secondary respectively.
The survey had also revealed that public schools in the state are characterized by poor teacher-student ratio, high level of unqualified teachers, high frequency of repetition among students, unacceptably high school dropout rate, poor school enrolment rate and high number of dilapidated schools.
He said the general household survey was conducted across the state to provide a true picture of the state. He said N6 billion has already been spent to make over 400 schools better by rehabilitating and providing furniture, water and toilets and that “a gargantuan investment is required to extend it to all our 4,265 primary schools.”
The sum of N43.9 billion has been allocated to the education sector for capital projects in 2017.
