The Lagos State government has awarded the sum of N7.7 million to 35 beneficiaries in fulfillment of the Governor Akinwummi Ambode’s promise to render financial assistance to residents regularly.
The financial assistance programme which is purposely to alleviate the beneficiaries’ human-related issues ranging from health, education, accommodation and start-up capital for entrepreneurship, is under the supervision of the new office set up by the governor – Office of Civic Engagement.
The Special Adviser on Civil Engagement to Governor Ambode, Mr. Joseph Kehinde said that the sole purpose of the office was to bring governance closer to the people. He added that the financial assistance programme is devoid of tribalism, religion or gender, as any needy Lagos resident could be a beneficiary, adding that it came into being as a result of the magnanimity of the governor who believed that some people are financially incapacitated and therefore, felt he needed to give hope to the hopeless either by reducing or eliminating their plight.
Joseph, however, advised the beneficiaries to ensure that they use the money given to them for the purpose it was meant for, and not to spend it on unnecessary things such as social ceremonies.
“I appeal to the people not to believe that this is another national cake or probably believe that this is free money from a free source to spend anyhow,” he stressed.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Batula Olaseinde, a physically-challenged individual, was presented with the sum of N200,000.
Olasehinde, who is self-employed, said that his major challenge was mobility as he had not been able to walk since the last 12 years due to a fall. In appreciation of the government’s gesture, he said; “Because of financial constraint, I have not been able to make progress in my trade. Now, with this money, I will be able to reenergise myself and trade. I thank the Lagos State governor and also praise the government for what they are doing. I wish them God’s favour.”
