He made the disclosure while addressing members of the National Youth Service Corps, who paid him a courtesy call in his office. He added that over 114 cases of human trafficking were being handled by the agency in the state.

Bello stated that the 35 persons were trafficked to neighbouring countries by alleged human traffickers with a promise to have them engaged  in juicy jobs a vow which turned false. It culminated in the trafficked persons surrendering themselves to the authorities of these countries before being handed over to NAPTIP.

“We have counselled and rehabilitated 35 persons trafficked abroad who  were handed over to us by authorities of these countries. We investigated their cases, counselled them and also counselled their communities from where they came from to ensure such did not reoccur again”.

The NAPTIP boss alleged that the perpetrators of the act carried out their illicit trade under the cover of religion and, as such, proved a hard nut to crack, owing to the provisions of the 1999 constitution which guaranteed freedom of worship.

He debunked the assertion that victims of human trafficking were illiterates, noting that among the 35 people counselled and reintegrated into the community six were graduates, while one was discovered to be a master’s degree holder. He stressed that been properly informed on the antics being applied by illicit human traffickers was the only antidote required to escape falling into their dragnet.
