38 Nigerians bag PhDs in Malaysia

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru, produced 30 and 18 Nigerians with PhD degrees respectively.
Earlier, 29 Nigerians have bagged PhD degrees in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Universiti Malaya (UM).  
Over 40 Nigerians also bagged Master’s degrees with some of them winning scholarship to do their PhD programmes, following their outstanding performances.
The graduates and other Nigerians in Diaspora called on the federal government to change its attitude toward implementation of research findings of graduates and scholars of Nigerian higher institutions.
They noted that any country that wants to make sustainable development must use research findings and recommendations.
Dr. Aminu Wushishi (Educational Administration), Dr. Lawan Adamu (Veterinary Medicine), Dr. Aliyu Yauri (Computer Science), Mr. and Mrs. Innocent Nwankwo ( both M.Sc, Communication), President, Nigerians in Diaspora, Malaysia (NIDOMY), Chief James Emarievbe, Mr. Bala Gambo and others appealed to government to collate and implement research findings.
Dr. Wushishi advised: “In the last two months, over 80 Nigerians have bagged PhD in Malaysia alone. And this is happening all over the world. But what happens to the theses that earned us the doctorate degrees? Most of them end on shelves! Three years plus hard work gathering dust. Government should get actively involved in collection of research works, especially PhD.”
Mr. Nwankwo said: “There should be thesis recommendations implementation committee and if such is in existence, it should be active. Theoretically and academically, researchers proffer solutions to problems. Government should get involved in practical application of the recommendations.”
Dr. Adamu, Mr. Bala and Chief Emarievbe called on the government to invest more on education and monitor its investment to stem the tide of brain drain and exodus of Nigerian youth to foreign lands to acquire standard education.
