A 38-year-old civil servant, Moridiyat Tijani, has approached an Agege customary court sitting at the Agege Local Government, Lagos, to seek the dissolution of her 12-year-old marriage to her husband, Mutairu Tijani.

Moridiyat, a resident of No 1, Baale Street, Ojodu Berger, told the court that the marriage had not produced any child and her husband had indicated his intention to marry another wife.

The petitioner said, “I begged him that we should keep trying, that God will answer our prayer but he has already made up his mind. Since then, he has changed his attitude towards me and stopped talking to me in the house. There was a Sunday my husband said he was told to come to work, and I said no problem. When he returned, he sat outside the house until 9pm before he came inside. He almost turned me to a psychiatric patient,”

Moridiyat begged the court to dissolve our marriage, saying, “If I don’t have a child now, it doesn’t mean I won’t have anymore. As long as I am still alive, there is hope for me.”

Tijani, 49, an automobile mechanic of No 30, Saka Temitope Street, Ifo, responded that he loved his wife so much that he was the only one who stood by her when she furthered her education at Ile-Ife.

He said, “On December 11, 2018, she came back from school and I told her that we should copulate but she refused and we had a little argument over it. The following day, I was at work when I got a call from my friend that my wife was packing out of our home. Immediately, I drove to the house and pleaded with my wife not to go, but she wouldn’t listen. My family members also called her and pleaded with her but she said she had already left and was not coming back.”

Tijani declared that though he still loved his wife, there was nothing he could do if she insisted on divorce.

The court president, Mrs Patricia Adeyanju, adjourned the matter till November 29, 2018 to allow for alternative dispute resolution.
