A magistrates’ court sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, has ordered the remand of four suspected cultists for allegedly smoking crystal methamphetamine, popularly known as ‘ice’, and leaves believed to be Indian hemp.

The suspects, Alabi Oluwaseyi, 20, Abolarin Seyi Olamide, 21, Oladejo Okikiola, 19, and Kehinde Ajayi, 20, were arraigned for alleged criminal conspiracy and making the atmosphere toxic.

The offences, the police said, contravened sections 97 and 192 of the Penal Code.

According to the police, their arrest was based on intelligence that some persons suspected to be members of a secret cult were camped in a room at a suite along Offa Garage.

“Investigation revealed that you are the criminal elements smoking dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and crystal methamphetamine aka ice and polluting the environment with its injurious smoke capable of causing damage to the health of unsuspecting members of the public.

“The substances are the psychoactive substances that influenced their nefarious activities,” the charge sheet added.

The prosecutor, Zaccheus Folurunsho, urged the court to remand the suspects pending the conclusion of the investigation, which was objected to by the defence counsel, Barr Idris Abdullahi.

The trial magistrate, AbdulRaheem Bello, in his ruling, granted the prosecutor’s prayer of the prosecutor and adjourned the case till April 25 for further mention.
