The Police on Monday arraigned four farmers at a Gudu Upper Area Court in Abuja for allegedly stealing tubers of yam.
The defendants are Philip Tekaa, Joesph Sabe, Demenege Sabe and Nyiyong Gabriel.
The defendants, all farmers and residents of Iddo Sarki, Airport road, Abuja, are standing trial on three-count charge of criminal trespass, joint act and theft.
The prosecutor, Mr Adeniyi Oyeyemi, told the court that one retired Colonel Solomon Ngbede reported the matter at Garki police station on Dec.20, 2016.
Oyeyemi said that the complainant alleged that on Dec. 19, 2016, the four defendants criminally trespassed into his farm land and stole tubers of yam from the farm.
He alleged that the defendants were apprehended with the loot and they confessed that one Sunday Peters of the same Iddo Sarki, Abuja, had sent them to commit the crime.
According to the prosecutor, “the total value of yam and products stolen and damaged was worth N470,000.’’
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 348, 79 and 288 of Penal Code.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The judge, Mr Sidi Bello, granted each of the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 and a reliable surety in like sum.
Bello adjourned the matter till April 10 for hearing. (NAN)
