Bauchi State police command has arrested four suspects for beating a 70-year-old woman to death for alleged witchcraft.‎

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Kamal Mohammed confirmed the arrest in an interview with journalists in his office Tuesday.

He disclosed that the incident happened at Doka village in Bauchi Local Government Area of the state on September 5th.

DSP Mohammed informed that the suspects seized the deceased, Mrs Liyatu Michael, and another elderly woman suspecting them of alleged witchcraft and later took them to a room and tortured  them.‎

He added that according to the report received by the police, the suspects later took her lifeless body outside the room and dumped it at the back of the room.‎

He however said that the other woman identified as Keziya, survived the beatings and has been hospitalised.

The police spokesperson informed that the police have arrested four suspects in connection with the death of Liyatu while others are still at large and the police are on their trail to arrest and bring them to justice.

He said that the police are investigating the circumstances that led to Liyatu’s death and the four arrested suspects would soon be charged to court for culpable homicide.

It was learnt that the two women allegedly confessed to be among people practising witchcraft in Doka community and the irate youths pounced on them in a bid to force them confess more details of their alleged atrocities.

The deceased, Liyatu, a mother of eight, and the other elderly woman, Keiziya, were rounded up by the youths and taken to a room where they were allegedly beaten to a pulp in presence of their children and other family members.

Further findings revealed that the two women were allegedly behind the illness of a young house wife in the community identified as Yelkon who was bedridden after childbirth.

“Yelkon has been bedridden and seriously sick immediately after she gave birth and we learnt that her illness was caused by the two women who confessed to have “tied her” and would be sick until she dies,” a resident who pleaded anonymity said.
