The Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Programme Phase 1 (ATASP-1) yesterday revealed that 40 construction companies that have so far bided for the construction of 80km coat dress and laterite roads and construction/rehabilitation of 2, 411 hectares surface irrigation scheme in Kano and Jigawa states respectively.
Speaking during a pre-bid conference held at ATASP’s office in Kano, ATASP zonal coordinator, Malam Ado Shehu, revealed that the programme is aimed at jobs and wealth generation along the value chains as well as enhancing food and nutrition security.
He stressed that the programme has created series of interventions in the agricultural sector, making it more viable and reliable.
Shehu added that under the project’s provisions, ATASP in collaboration with the African Development Bank will construct and rehabilitate 1,141 hectares of surface irrigation scheme in Kano and 1,270 hectares in Jigawa, making a total of 2, 411 hectares.
He added that the programme was working in 11 local government areas across the two states.
“We have taken you round the entire projects site and this conference is to have a clean and transparent bidding process that will allow and bring support to ATASP’s move for value addition through processing, better nutritious product and market linkages.
These will improve farm profits as well as income enhancement that will allow positive development from subsistence to commercial agriculture.
