The National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT) said it has trained 40 tomato farmers in North East sub-region on value addition in tomato production.

The National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT) said it has trained 40 tomato farmers in the North-East sub-region on value addition in tomato production.

Speaking during the training on Wednesday in Gombe, Chairman of NIHORT Governing Board, Major General Mohammad Garba (rtd), said the training was crucial to achieving sustainable economic empowerment and growth in the commodity value chain of tomatoes.

According to him, tomato is capable of impacting positively on the economic development of Nigeria.

In his remarks, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIHORT, Dr, Abayomi A Olaniyan, noted that Nigeria currently produced 2.3 million metric tons against 1.8 million tones produces two years ago, while the National demand stood at three million metric tons.
