A High Court sitting in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, has sentenced a 40-year-old man, Aniekan Udom, to life imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old boy.

Justice Bennett Ilaumo found the accused guilty of rape, punishable by sections 1 and 2 of Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, 2020, in suit number HU/23C/2020.

According to the state’s counsel, Maria Akpan, the accused was caught committing the offence in a broad daylight on August 28, 2020. She told the court that the lesson teacher of the victim, one Iniobong Nta, had caught the accused at the backyard of their residence, No 12, Anyan-Ikot Street, off Abak Road, Uyo, with his penis inserted into the anus of the victim, a primary four pupil.

She said the accused, who ran way on sighting Nta, was later arrested by the police.

Udom, a native of Ikot Nkim in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area and neighbour to the victim, pleaded guilty to the offence.

The police medical report confirmed that the boy was raped through the anus, where he had bruises.
