Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested 43 suspects over public disturbance across the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said the suspects were apprehended in parts of Asaba metropolis during a crackdown on disturbances orchestrated by hoodlums who attempted to hijack the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

He noted that during the festivities, the hoodlums engaged in acts of lawlessness, including blocking major roads, participating in illegal car races and reckless driving.

He said their actions led to several commuters being knocked down in the chaos.

Edafe further said the situation escalated as the hoodlums began throwing fireworks at members of the public, causing widespread panic. He added that the suspects eventually resorted to violent attacks on police patrol teams, hurling stones and other dangerous objects at officers.

He further said, “They were also burning tires at key junctions thereby deliberately obstructing free and safe movement, especially for worshippers returning from New Year church services.”

He explained that the police deployed lawful crowd control measures to disperse the violent mob and restore order.

He listed items recovered from the suspects to include 25 vehicles, eight tricycles, various fireworks and hard drugs.
