The Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) says its taskforce team has apprehended 47 illegal tax collectors operating in different areas of the state.

Jacintha Akaahan, the media aide to the Acting Chairman of BIRS, Emmanuel Agema, said the feat was achieved within the past six months of her principal at the helm of the Service.

She noted that on assumption of office, the chairman made clear his zero tolerance to illegal checkpoint operators and their activities and therefore constituted a taskforce team comprising BIRS staff and security agents that carried out the arrests of the suspects.

Akaahan stated that of the 47 suspects, 10 were arrested at Igbor in Gwer East Local Government Area, six at Wuese in Konshisha LGA, eight were arrested in Otukpa in Ogbadigbo LGA and five in Howe in Gwer East LGA.

She further stated that 10 suspects were nabbed for illegal roadblock operation in North bank vicinity of Makurdi while illegal checkpoints were dismantled in Akeior in Utange of Ushongo, Tor Mkar in Konshisha LGA, Amaafu and Gungul.

She added that three notorious suspects who issued fake receipts were arrested in Zaki Biam in Ukum LGA of the state.

She also said that the chairman recently led a patrol of security operatives comprising men of the Nigeria Police Force and the civil defence during which five culprits were arrested at three locations in Ushongo and Vandeikya LGAs.

The media aide added that the cases were at various stages with some suspects in custody while others had been arraigned.
