5 Loveth Ayila – This 20 year old Makwada Babes striker was one of the players that did put a good showing at the Canada event. Apart from her beautifully taken goal against England that put the falconets level, her overall performances in terms of shots on target and tackles were immense and her hard work also paid off as she has been named as of the players who have been promoted to senior the national team, the Super Falcons.
4 Sandra Chiichii – Falconets goalkeeper Chichi’s 78.1% save rate was only second to Germany’s Meike Kaemper who had 81.3% at the tournament. The 17 year old Ibom Angels FC keeper was instrumental in Nigeria reaching final in Montreal as her 25 saves made sure the team only conceded 6 goals before Lenna Petermann’s goal in the final’s extra time. The Benue State born shot stopper has proved she has a bright future in the women’s game and with age on her side, the sky is surely the limit.
3 Courtney Dike – This 19 year old Oklahoma State University student is a sure prove that one could be blessed with beauty, brains and sporting talents. Sister to Super Eagles striker Bright Dike and a cousin to another Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike, it showed that with Courtney football runs in the family.
Apart from entering the record books for scoring the fastest goal in the history of the competition with her 13th second goal against South Korea, she scored another fantastic goal in the semi finals and as the competition ends Dike has revealed she is going back to school to continue her business studies.
2 Uchechi Sunday – This 20 year old Rivers FC striker was Nigeria’s second highest goal scorer and her three goals were important in the Falconets quest for the trophy. Being one of the most experienced team members after representing the Falcons at the 2011 World Cup as the youngest player (alongside Desire Oparanozie) her vast knowledge of the game was a huge advantage as she was able to set a good example to the younger players with her performances.
1 Asisat Oshoala – who would it be if not her? Best player of the tournament, highest goal scorer, and scorer of the best goal of the event, Oshoala won them all. She took the world by storm. It was unfortunate that she was unable to cap off her immense performances with a goal in the final. However, Nigerian football fans will continue to cherish the importance and beauty of her 7 goals and records which include becoming the first player in the history of the competition to score 4 goals in a single game (scored four against N.Korea).
