Five students of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapade, have been rescued by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command after a gun duel with their alleged abductors.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, said in a statement on Wednesday morning that the students were kidnapped on Monday, at about 10:55 p.m. in the Sapade area of Ogun State.
According to him, “Ipara Division received a distress report of a suspected kidnapping. Acting promptly, a patrol team was deployed to the scene where an ash-coloured Toyota vehicle was discovered abandoned”.
Babaseyi disclosed that the vehicle showed signs of violence.

“The vehicle was observed with visible bullet impacts and blood stains, while mobile phones and other personal belongings were recovered from within,” he said.
He added that an identity card found at the scene confirmed that the victims were students of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapade.
“This development necessitated the immediate escalation of the incident and activation of a full-scale rescue operation,” the police Spokesperson noted.
Following the report, he quoted the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, to have ordered a coordinated response.
Babaseyi said that the CP “promptly ordered the deployment of tactical units and directed an intelligence-led rescue operation to safely locate and rescue the victims.”
The police spokesperson added that the operation to include “operatives of Isara Area Command, Ipara Division, SWAT, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Quick Response Squad (QRS), and OP MESA,” adding that they carried out “coordinated bush combing and tracking operations along suspected escape routes.”
He explained that sustained pressure on the kidnappers led to the rescue of the victims the following day.
“The sustained operational pressure led to the successful rescue of the five (5) victims from the custody of the abductors on 28th April 2026,” Babaseyi stated.
The victims were immediately taken for medical care.
“The victims were immediately evacuated, debriefed, and taken for medical attention due to conditions sustained while in captivity,” he said.
Babaseyi further revealed that the kidnappers engaged the police during the operation.
“During the rescue operation, the kidnappers engaged operatives in a gun duel but were overwhelmed by superior firepower and tactical response, forcing them to flee with suspected gunshot wounds,” he said
He noted that “no casualty was recorded among security operatives.”
The police command said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
