5 suspects held for robbing Abuja-bound passengers

Five persons have been apprehended by the police in Benue State for allegedly robbing passengers travelling from Calabar in Cross River State to Abuja along the Makurdi – Lafia highway.

Police spokesperson in the state, SP Catherine Anene, said yesterday that the passengers were attacked after the vehicle they were travelling in broke down along a section of the Makurdi – Lafia dual carriage highway in Benue State.

Anene explained, “On 9/11/2024 at about 1900hrs (7pm), information was received that while commuters were on transit from Calabar to Abuja, their vehicle broke down along Makurdi – Lafia road and some robbers along the road attacked them and robbed them of their belongings. 

“During investigation, the following persons were arrested; Aondona Kyemtu (22), Aondona Ahile (23), Solomon Tarkaa (40), Solomon Iorember (40) and Isaac Terkula (23).

“Exhibits recovered from them include; two phones, foodstuff and clothing identified by passengers as their goods. Suspects have been charged to court.”

Anene warned hoodlums disturbing public peace in the state to relocate for their own good or face the consequences of their actions. 

In another incident, the police spokesperson said a gunrunner was arrested by operatives of the state police command in Ushongo Local Government Area of the state.

She said, “On 18/11/2024 at about 1025hrs (10:25am), while police officers were on routine stop and search duties along Ikyobo-Agbede Road, Ushongo LGA, they intercepted one Daniel Emmanuel on a motorcycle. 

“A search at the spot led to the recovery of two locally made pistols in his bag. Investigation is ongoing to unravel his source and the receivers he intends to supply.”
