50 arraigned for operating illegal checkpoints in Benue

Fifty people have been arraigned in magistrates’ courts in Benue State for operating illegal checkpoints and issuing fake receipts.

Jacintha Benard, spokesperson to the acting Chairman of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), who disclosed this on Wednesday, said the feat was achieved by BIRS in collaboration with the various security agencies poised to rid the state of all illegal checkpoints and other fraudulent manipulations associated with revenue collection.

She noted that available records from the enforcement and legal departments of the service showed that over 50 persons had so far been arrested and arraigned for prosecution in 23 cases.

Benard said the suspects, including the notorious operators of the federal haulage led by one Bernard Iornongu, who were charged with forgery, impersonation, criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, among others, were arrested at different locations across the state.
