50 teams clash at national table tennis tourney in osun
Excitement builds in Otan Ayegbaju as the Osun State town prepares to host 50 teams from across Nigeria for the 5th Michael and Felicia Alabi Memorial National Table Tennis Championships.
Sponsored by the Michael and Felicia Alabi Foundation and organized by the Osun State Table Tennis Association under the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), the event will take place at the Idera Multi-Purpose Hall from April 27 to May 3, 2025.
Teams will arrive from states including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Taraba, Nasarawa, Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Kwara, Kogi, Ekiti, Katsina, Niger, Zamfara, and the host state, Osun. Notable clubs such as Aruna Sports Club, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigeria Police Force are also expected.
With prize money exceeding ₦11.5 million, the one-week tournament will unfold at the newly constructed Michael and Felicia Alabi Memorial Table Tennis Hall.
Ayodeji Alabi, chairman of the Osun State Table Tennis Association, emphasized the competition’s mission to support talent discovery and youth empowerment across Nigeria.
“This year, we expect about 400 to 450 participants, and we will house and feed them free of charge. This year’s tournament is different because we have created an environment where participants will sleep and eat well,” Alabi stated.
The 2025 edition will also feature para and deaf competitions, with categories spanning men’s and women’s singles, U-15 boys’ and girls’ singles, doubles, mixed doubles, veterans, and special events for para and deaf athletes.
