No fewer than 50 “Kalare” thugs in Gombe State have repented and handed over their weapons to the Gombe State Police Command.

Addressing the repentant thugs at the command’s headquarters, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Hayatu Usman, said over 50 thugs voluntarily renounced their membership of the gang and gave him the assurance of their unalloyed support towards ensuring safety and security in the state.

He said, “We discovered that there are so many ways that we can adopt to change their lives. Because it is not a question of arresting somebody to get him to prison or charge him to court or for him to be convicted and sentenced.

“Because most of the offences they commit are not offences that warrant a death sentence or whatever. There are some offences that have options of fine. And sometimes they pay their fines and return to the community to continue with their criminal activities.”

The CP disclosed that there was an ongoing engagement with stakeholders in the communities he had visited, including the youths and community leaders, to implement grassroots policing through community partnership.

The CP welcomed the youths and thanked them for turning over a new leaf, urging them to equally sensitise their friends who were yet to renounce their membership of the gang.

One of the repentant thugs, Abba Maigoro Bolari, said most of them were tired of running and hiding from the law, calling on the government to pardon their past deeds and promising not to repeat them.
