At least 500 amateurs and professional golfers will be playing in this year’s IBB Golf and Country Club’s Independence anniversary tournament which will tee-off on Thursday, September 30 at the lush green IBB golf course in Abuja.

The Chairman of the organising committee and vice-captain of the club, Mike Onoja Ekoja who addressed the press yesterday on the annual tournament staged annually to celebrate Nigeria’s independence said this year’s edition is targeted at creating more awareness on the need for unity and peace in the country.

He also disclosed that this year’s tournament will welcome guest golfers from neighbouring countries like Ghana to celebrate Nigeria’s 61st Independence anniversary.

Apart from entrenching peace and unity, he said the tournament would help in advertising the game of golf in Nigeria.

“This year’s tournament is going to attract up to 500 golfers from Nigeria and other African countries like Ghana. Aside from using the tournament to celebrate Nigeria’s 61st Independence, we want to use it to preach peace and unity.

“The golf course is in perfect condition. Come rain, come sunshine, the course is ready,” he assured.

On his part, the competition secretary, Julius Fadairo said there would be trophies and other prizes for winners when the tournament ends on October 3.

According to the line up of matches as disclosed by the competition secretary, all male and female golfers playing handicap 19 and above will tee-off the tourney today.

He also said all male and female players on handicap 0-18 irrespective of age will play on Friday, October 1.
