The Flour Milling Association of Nigeria (FMAN) has trained over 5,000 wheat farmers on the use of modern technology to enhance production.

The national programme manager of the FMAN Wheat Development Programme, Dr Aliyu Sama’ila, said farmers were drawn from four local government areas of the state.

He said they were introduced to a new technology that would enhance their production, explaining that in 2020, 5.9 million metric tons worth USD4 billion were imported into the country.

“Our local wheat will soon substitute foreign wheat in our markets,” he said.

The Commissioner for Agriculture in the state, Professor Abubakar Aminu, said the state government had distributed 120,000 metric tons of wheat to farmers, among other inputs.

He added that N4 billion worth of loans were secured for rice, wheat and tomato farmers in the state.

Dr Solomon Aseffa of the African Development Bank said wheat production would create more jobs and increase farmers’ income.
